The favourite peace day activity for middle school this year was to create Peace Flags and send them off to another class around the world.
Our Peace Flags are set to soar and fly around the world bringing with them thoughts and feelings of peace to other children and youth wherever they land.
September classes focus on the feelings of Peace or Ahimsa in the yogic tradition acting out poses that reflect the symbols of peace and opening our hearts for peaceful feelings.
Dove – Pigeon Pose
Olive Branch – Tree Pose extending a branch (arm) to another
Peace Fingers – Peace Breath
Star of David – Star Pose
Earth – Wheel Pose
Rainbow Flag – Waves or Rainbow Pose
Peace Sign – Create a large peace sign with the whole group

Fabric Scraps – can be any colour even patterned, works best with light colours so kids can add symbols to them.
Ribbon – Any colour – make sure to leave enough on the ends to tie onto the next group.
Camera - Take photos to share.
Cut out fabric flags. Roughly 7″ x 5″ or 30mm x 18mm (note: if you use pinking shears they won’t unravel).
Make 2 per child as they will likely want one to take home.
Include one extra for you to make a title page with to introduce your group.
Have students decorate the flags with symbols of peace and sign their names.
At home – sew the ribbon to the top of the flags just leaving 1cm or 1/2″ between each flag. Remember to leave enough ribbon at the end (min 6″ or 16mm) to tie onto the next group.
OR if sewing is not your strength punch holes in the top edges of the flags and loop the ribbon through the loops making a small knot in each hole to keep the flags in place.
Take a photo of your group holding their string or their individual flags to post on-line and send to the next group. Keep it simple to keep the flags moving.
Post your photos for the previous classes to see.
Track where the flags go and be inspired by your passion for peace.
